Shanghaixu offers QiPaos¡ªthe most famous traditional Chinese dress style. QiPao means ¡°long dress¡± in Chinese, and the style dates back from the Qing Dynasty, some 400 years ago. That the style has survived that long is a testament to the purity of its form.
Prices for QiPaos on display at Shanghaixu range from RMB 2800 to RMB 4800. These prices are negotiable.
QiPaos are usually made in pure silk. Some are vowen in satin or damask style. This allows for style variations in the cut and aspect of the dress.
Size may be a problem for travelers, as Chinese women are generally not very tall. Shanghaixu offers many different sizes, but if you do not find your size, you can choose to place a special order. Their tailor will take your measurements, and make one for you within about a week.
Prices differ as a function of style, not fabric. A tailor-made QiPao costs RMB 3000 to RMB 5000, but you can negotiate the price too.
