Do you know which type of dressing style is especially popular with Chinese people during the celebrations of the Spring Festival, in early February? Answer: the Tang style, made after the renowned design style of the Tang Dynasty. Tang apparel ¨C pronounced Tang Zhuang (ÌÆ×°) in Chinese -- looks very dapper, and is supposed to bring luck to its wearers.
Located in the basement of the Xihua Shopping Mall, the Tangyun Tang Apparel outlet displays their selection of national costumes in an orderly and neat manner for the benefit of their customers. At first glance, I was surprised by their low prices. This brought me to give a closer look to the quality of the clothes, but I did not see any shortcomings. Stitching was skillful, no corners cut.
According to the shop assistants (who could not speak English) the shop selection is manufactured in Beijing. The shop itself enjoys a degree of popularity with the locals, especially older Beijingers. One of the assistants recommended a purple Tang suit for my Grandma. This item featured golden treads stitched in a phoenix pattern. It felt pretty soft, and comfortable.
Prices range from RMB 100 to RMB 300. No bargaining.
What I appreciated: Low prices, traditional patterns
What customers appreciate: Low prices, skillful sewing
