If you visit the famous Panjiayuan Collection Market, don’t miss the Xiangcun Art Studio. They specialize in china clay works made by graduates of the Northeast Normal University’s Art Department. The exhibits by the entrance will surely attract you into the shop.

Once inside, you’ll find various clay models displayed on the shelves. Their products are divided into three main categories: figures, ashtrays, and pencil vases. The most striking characteristic of their works is the countryside style. The rustic clay figures give off a soothing feel in the midst of a busy city.

I found a set of small windlass, often seen in China’s countryside, very interesting. Priced at RMB 150, the set contains a well, a bucket, and a rope-winder, all delicately designed.

Prices for smaller figures sell for RMB 180 each, while the bigger models cost RMB 350 each. The studio also offers custom-made service. If you show them a picture, they can create a caricature of the picture within 20 days.
