If you visit the famous Panjiayuan Collection Market, don¡¯t miss the Xiangcun Art Studio. They specialize in china clay works made by graduates of the Northeast Normal University¡¯s Art Department. The exhibits by the entrance will surely attract you into the shop.
Once inside, you¡¯ll find various clay models displayed on the shelves. Their products are divided into three main categories: figures, ashtrays, and pencil vases. The most striking characteristic of their works is the countryside style. The rustic clay figures give off a soothing feel in the midst of a busy city.
I found a set of small windlass, often seen in China¡¯s countryside, very interesting. Priced at RMB 150, the set contains a well, a bucket, and a rope-winder, all delicately designed.
Prices for smaller figures sell for RMB 180 each, while the bigger models cost RMB 350 each. The studio also offers custom-made service. If you show them a picture, they can create a caricature of the picture within 20 days.
