On the Fuchengmen Wai Street, there is a Laolvtou Donkey Burger Restaurant that is rather popular with the local residents. Donkey burger is the specialty of Baoding, a city 140 km south of Beijing. The bread used is Huoshao, a type of baked wheaten cake that is crispy outside, but soft inside. By default, sliced donkey meat, lettuce and shredded green peppers are stuffed in between the Huoshao. Although you can certainly customize your burger to your taste.
What makes donkey meat so special is its tenderness despite being very lean. People who dislike greasy red meat favor the donkey burger for its succulent and non-oily taste.
The donkey theme runs throughout the restaurant. For example, there is a light case with a donkey picture hanging on the wall. In addition, all Chinese idioms including the word ¡°Donkey¡± are inscribed on the wall as well.
A regular donkey burger costs RMB 5, although one is usually not enough for a meal. You can also try a bowl of Donkey Meat Noodle Soup, which costs you RMB 6, or perhaps try a bowl of Eight-treasure Porridge for RMB 2.
