Beijing pictures, Huntun Hou Huntun Hou

Wonton, also called Huntun in Chinese, is a kind of dumpling filled with spiced minced pork, usually served in soup. Based on historical records, wonton has been popular with the Chinese for over a thousand years, especially in winter.

Huntun Hou, a time-honored brand in China, originated from Hou Tingjie, at the old Dongan Market of Wangfujing in 1959. Huntun Hou has since become the most famous wonton restaurant brand in Beijing, with several establishments operating under this moniker in the capital.

The chain mainly serves wonton and sesame buns. Their brand of wonton is characterized by a thin wrap, fine stuffing, a tasty soup and a good diversity of condiments.

I had a meal at the Huntun Hou situated on the southwest corner of Hepingmen. Inside the restaurant, the decoration is not luxurious, with square Chinese-style tables and stools. They serve bowls of wonton stuffed with fresh pork (Xian Rou Huntun in Chinese) for RMB 5 a bowl, and wonton stuffed with crab meat (Xie Rou Huntun in Chinese) for RMB 8 a bowl.

A bowl usually contains 10 wontons which swim in a delicious chicken soup or bone soup stewed for about 6 hours. Condiments include dried purple seaweed, coriander, spiced cabbage, and dried small shrimps. The menu also features soup noodles, and steamed stuffed buns.
