Shanghai cuisine has long been known for its large variety and light taste. They are not common in Beijing, and high quality ones are particularly rare.

Cook Restaurant, which specializes in cooking Shanghai dishes, lies in the bustling and easy-to-find Nan Xin Cang Cultural Street, an area that still maintains much of its 600-year root. As a two-storied restaurant, Cook is huge. However, they manage to keep a very relaxing atmosphere. The manager and chefs are all from Shanghai, insuring that the restaurant stays true to its roots.

Choose from dozens of specialties: Stewed Yellow Croaker Fillets in Rice with Sauce, Stir-fried Eel, Sauceed Shrimps, Stir Fried Shrimps, and Tofu with Crab Meat Sauce just to name a few.  Their prices range from RMB 20 to RMB 80. Also recommended are Maître Noodles, Pork Rib Noodles, and their ever popular Springtime Noodles. The Noodles is most renowned in Shanghai cuisine. A must-try for anyone not familiar with Shanghai dishes.

While there are many great and not-so-great restaurants in Beijing, most consider Shang Run She Pin one of the best in the business in all areas.

Its fusion dishes combines the best of Chinese and western elements. The cooking is mostly traditional, but the chefs spice things up with western decorations and style. The kitchen is semi-open to the customers, so you can see the dishes being prepared, the fresh ingredients they use, and the kitchen’s cleanness.

Shang Run She Pin also has a full bar and can serve a variety of beverages, including mixed drinks. For after-meal sitting, they offer full desert menu and a variety of hot and cold beverages like coffee and tea. They also provide WIFI connection and free magazines.

Adding to this restaurant’s atmosphere is the piano plays every day. While most of the time a professional pianist plays during your meal, sometimes a customer can try his hand at a performance.

Considering all its amenities and ambiance, the price here is reasonable. Average cost per person: RMB 150—RMB 200.
